Why a Supplier List Is Not Enough for China Manufacturing

OEM, ODM, prototype shop, mold shop, and assembly factory all appear as suppliers but serve very different stages. A list does not tell you which type fits your current product stage or what disclosures are appropriate for each type.

Legal entity registration status

A supplier's listed name may not match the registered legal entity name. Knowing the correct legal entity — and verifying that it is active and appropriately registered — is necessary before signing any NNN, manufacturing agreement, or tooling PO.

Match to product stage and supplier type

Narrow the list to entities that fit your current stage — prototype, tooling, pre-production, or production. Remove entities that are the wrong supplier type for where you are now.

Prepare NNN before outreach

Before you approach any supplier with product information, have a China NNN agreement template ready. This does not need to slow down the outreach — it just needs to be prepared in advance so the sequence is right.

Define your disclosure boundary for first contact

Know exactly what you will share at first contact (product category, approximate specs, volume) and what you will hold back until after the NNN is signed (CAD files, BOM, PCB, brand name, tooling details).

Approach selectively, not broadly

Sending detailed product information to 20 suppliers simultaneously maximizes market coverage but distributes your product details widely before control structure is in place. A staged approach — starting with 2-3 verified candidates — is more controllable.
